Six accolades for product designs at the “red dot award”The Porsche Studios in Weissach and Zell am See impress with innovative design

Stuttgart. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, impressively proved its competence in matters of innovative design at this year’s “red dot award for product design”, presented by the North Rhine-Westphalia Design Centre. The two design studios of Porsche in Weissach and Zell am See won a total of three “red dot: best of the best for top design quality” awards, and three “red dot for excellent design quality” awards. The prizes are awarded today in Essen.

For Michael Mauer, manager of the design studio at the Development Centre in Weissach, the range of products for which Porsche has received prizes is particularly noteworthy: “It speaks volumes about the competence of our studio when a sports car, a forklift truck and an organ console simultaneously receive a prize for their design.” Thus the 911 sports car classic was also awarded the “red dot: best of the best” in 2004 as was a forklift truck designed by Porsche designers on behalf of Linde AG. The design of the console and manuals of the Ladegast organ in Leipzig was also awarded with a “red dot”. This is also an assignment carried out by Porsche for external customers – the Nicholas Church in Leipzig and the organ-making company of Eule in Bautzen.

At the award ceremony in Essen, Mauer emphasised the significance of successful design for the success of the company: “The design of our sports cars is noted for its clarity, tension and superb precision in the execution. Manufacturers from other industries wanting to form a brand with consistently high-quality design can benefit from this core competence.” At its Development Centre in Weissach, Porsche traditionally offers engineering services to other companies, to which the area of design also belongs, including with the special topic of “transportation”.

By contrast, the design studio in Zell am See, which was founded by Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche and has been a majority holding of Porsche AG since 2003, concentrates on the design of men’s accessories for the Porsche Design brand as well as on industrial products, household appliances and consumer goods for external clients. At this year’s competition, the P 8404 sunglasses with screwless lens fitting from the Porsche Design glasses collection won the “red dot: best of the best” award, while the P`1026 model, whose main features are the imposing upper line and innovative lens fitting, received a “red dot award”. The compact “Solitair” toaster which was designed at the studio in Zell am See on behalf of Robert Bosch Hausgeräte GmbH also received an award.

The “red dot award for product design” is one of the largest and best-known design competitions in the world, with around 4,000 applications submitted annually from over 40 countries.
